TYPE OF PUBLICATIONS
Marine Mammal Science publishes several types of contributions:
- Articles — Original research presenting significant advances in marine mammal science.
- Review Articles — Critical evaluations of existing research that provide new perspectives or conceptual frameworks.
- Notes — Short communications describing current research, preliminary findings, or new methods.
- Opinions — Invited contributions addressing selected topics of interest to the marine mammal science community.
- Letters — Communications related to previously published papers, scientific interpretation, and emerging topics of interest.
Articles, Review Articles, and Notes undergo peer review. Letters are evaluated by the Editor and, when responding to published work, are shared with the original authors for response before publication.
RESEARCH SCOPE AND PUBLICATION STANDARDS
The journal prioritizes research that provides meaningful advances in understanding marine mammals. Studies focused on limited geographic areas, individual observations, or confirmatory findings are considered when they provide broader scientific significance.
Marine Mammal Science follows established ethical standards for research involving live animals. All reported animal research must comply with relevant animal care guidelines and regulations in the country where the work was conducted.
OUR NEIGHBORS IN THE BLUE:
NEW COVER ARTWORK FOR MMS

We are delighted to introduce the new cover artwork for Marine Mammal Science, created by Adriana Diaz, winner of the Society for Marine Mammalogy’s Call for Marine Mammal Artists & Photographers.
Titled Our Neighbors in the Blue, the piece beautifully brings together 26 marine mammal species from around the world, blending familiar icons like the humpback whale and manatee with lesser-known species to highlight the richness of ocean biodiversity. Arranged in a circular composition, the artwork reflects the interconnectedness of our global oceans—and the shared impact we have on marine life, no matter where it is found.
We extend our warmest congratulations to Adriana on this achievement, and sincere thanks to all who submitted their work. The creativity and passion shown across the entries made this a truly inspiring selection process, and we are grateful to our community for contributing to this celebration of marine mammal science and art.
